Honda Civic 1st Generation (1972-1979)

Honda built the Civic to create an economical city car. This led to sales success and awards, especially as one of the by-products of making a small, lightweight and economical car is low pollution.

Built on a single monocoque body, the 1st generation Civic was available in 2 and 3 door body styles with a 1.2 engine, or 4 door body with with Honda’s new 1.5 CVCC engine.

Awards and accolades given to the this new car model created by Honda include;

  • Japanese car of the year (1971, 1972, 1974)
  • European car of the year (1973)
  • American car of the year (1974)
  • 1st place in American fuel economy test (1974, 1975, 1976, 1977)
